Mahjong Ways free spins: the basic rules

The free spins feature is a bonus round in Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2. In both games, three Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels trigger free spins, and each additional Scatter adds two more spins. Scatters can also retrigger the feature while it is active.

The starting number differs: Mahjong Ways awards 12 free spins for three Scatters, while Mahjong Ways 2 awards 10. During free spins, both games use a multiplier ladder of x2, x4, x6 and x10. These are feature rules, not a promise of a particular result. The outcome of a spin is random, and a triggered feature does not guarantee a win.

Mahjong Ways scatter: what counts

The Scatter is a distinct symbol, shown with the red character 胡 (hu). The trigger is based on three Scatters appearing anywhere, not on a specific line or reel position. The rule applies to both games. The Scatter is not a Wild: the gold-ingot Wild substitutes for other symbols, but not for the Scatter.

An additional Scatter beyond the three needed for the trigger adds two free spins. The game rules also allow retriggers during the feature. These rules explain how the spin count can change; they do not change the randomness of the outcome or guarantee that a player will reach the maximum possible number of spins.

What happens to gold symbols

Both games use Gold Plated symbols in the base game on reels 2, 3 and/or 4. When a gold symbol is part of a win, it turns into a Wild after the next symbols cascade down. Mahjong Ways 2 adds a specific free-spins rule: all symbols on reel 3, apart from Wild and Scatter, appear in gold. If an eligible gold symbol is involved in a win, it can then turn into a Wild under the game’s symbol rule.

That middle-reel detail belongs to Mahjong Ways 2. It is not a “black Scatter” or a separate super-Scatter feature. The two games share the free-spin multiplier ladder, but their starting spin counts and other feature details are not identical.

Mahjong Ways bonus: how often can it trigger?

The official game information lists the free-spins hit rate as 0.49% for Mahjong Ways and 0.46% for Mahjong Ways 2. These are rare-event figures. They should not be read as a schedule, a guarantee after a certain number of spins, or a way to predict when the next feature will appear. Each spin is independent, and patterns, streaks or previous results do not make a Scatter due.

The same information gives the overall RTP and the portion attributed to the feature. Mahjong Ways has a 96.92% RTP in total, made up of 68.89% for the main game and 28.03% for free spins. Mahjong Ways 2 has a 96.95% total RTP, with 70.39% attributed to the main game and 26.56% to free spins.

RTP is a long-term theoretical measure for a game version. It does not tell a player what will happen in an individual session, and it is not a return guarantee. The feature’s RTP share is the portion of the theoretical return assigned to that part of the game, not the chance of triggering it. Why the low hit rate matters

With listed feature hit rates below one per cent, a player may go through many spins without seeing free spins. That is consistent with a rare event and does not prove that a game is broken or that a bonus is about to arrive. Avoid increasing play or spending more in an attempt to force the feature. A previous Scatter or a long period without one gives no reliable prediction for the next spin.

No feature buy in the official rules

The official rule PDFs for Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2 do not describe a feature-buy or bonus-buy option. The documented feature is triggered by Scatter symbols during play. A platform may display its own promotions or interface elements, but that does not change what is specified in the official rules for these games.

PG Soft’s public demo is available through its game catalogue, and the games are designed to run as HTML5 games in a browser or within a gaming platform. The official materials do not list a standalone Mahjong Ways APK. A platform account is separate from the game itself; the games do not have their own login or registration system. Platform bonuses: check the terms first

A gaming platform may advertise its own bonus or promotion alongside a game. Such an offer is separate from the PG Soft free-spins feature. The game rules do not set the platform’s promotion terms, and the availability, eligibility and conditions depend on the platform.

Before accepting an offer, check its terms for wagering requirements, expiry, eligible games, any restrictions on play and what happens if the conditions are not met. Do not assume that a platform promotion will trigger Mahjong Ways free spins, increase the game’s Scatter rate or alter the game’s published RTP. No offer should be treated as a reason to play beyond a limit you have set.

Payment options also depend on the platform. GCash Help Center information says licensed gaming top-up and withdrawal services were removed effective 16 August 2025. BSP memorandum M-2025-029, dated 14 August 2025, instructed BSP-supervised e-wallets to remove in-app links to gambling sites. Check current details directly with the relevant service rather than relying on old payment instructions.

Philippines: check the platform, not just the game

Gambling in the Philippines is regulated by PAGCOR. Only PAGCOR-licensed or registered platforms may legally offer online games to players in the country. This guide does not confirm that Mahjong Ways is approved on any specific platform. PAGCOR rules prohibit gambling for people under 21. Government officials and employees, members of the AFP and PNP, and people listed on the National Database of Restricted Persons are also barred. These restrictions apply regardless of whether a game’s demo is accessible.

Myths about black Scatter and super Scatter

“Black Scatter” or “scatter hitam” is not part of Mahjong Ways or Mahjong Ways 2 in the official game rules. The official Scatter is shown with the red character 胡. Claims about a special black version should therefore not be treated as a verified feature of either PG Soft game.

“Mahjong Ways super scatter” is also a misleading search phrase for this series. Mahjong Wins Super Scatter is a different mahjong-themed slot from another provider, Pragmatic Play; it is not a Mahjong Ways title from PG Soft. Likewise, games labelled Mahjong Ways 3 on platforms are from other studios, not part of PG Soft’s official catalogue, which lists Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2. Predictors, “tricks”, patterns and hacks do not change the result. Spins are generated randomly and are independent, so a sequence of symbols cannot reliably reveal when a Scatter or bonus will land. Be cautious of sites or posts that claim to sell a prediction method or guarantee a feature.
