What is the Mahjong Ways game?

Mahjong Ways is a ways-to-win video slot from Pocket Games Soft, commonly known as PG Soft. Its symbols are based on mahjong tiles, but the game is not a digital version of the traditional tile game. Wins are formed by matching slot symbols across the reels, and winning symbols can disappear to make room for new ones. Mahjong Ways 2 is the sequel, with a changed reel layout and a higher number of ways to win.

PG Soft announced Mahjong Ways in December 2019 as its first mahjong-themed slot. The studio announced Mahjong Ways 2 in April 2020. Both games are classified as Classic / Chinese and use the same central ideas: tile symbols, cascading wins, gold-plated symbols and a multiplier that can rise during a spin.

The games were tested by Gaming Associates. The splash screen in the public demo displays “Dilisensi di Malta” with an MGA logo and “Disertifikasi oleh GA / BMM”. Those demo-screen labels describe what is shown in the game; they should not be read as a statement about the legal status of gambling in Bangladesh. PG Soft’s [official game information] (https://www.pgsoft.com/en/games/50/) is a reference for the provider’s catalogue.

The number of ways is displayed above the reels in the public PG Soft demo. A ways count is not a promise that a spin will win: it describes the game’s possible symbol paths for forming wins. The two games also have different reel layouts, so the 2,000 ways in Mahjong Ways 2 should not be interpreted as a higher chance of a particular payout without considering the full game rules.

Mahjong Ways slot: grid, symbols and specifications

Both games use five reels. Mahjong Ways has four symbol positions on each reel, giving a 5-by-4 layout and 1,024 ways to win. Mahjong Ways 2 adds an extra row on reels 2, 3 and 4. Its 4-5-5-5-4 layout has 2,000 ways. This additional central row is the most visible grid change between the two versions.

The Wild is shown as a gold ingot marked WILD. It substitutes for all symbols except Scatter. The Scatter is a red symbol bearing the character 胡 (hu). Scatters have a special role in triggering the free-spins feature rather than acting as ordinary matching symbols.

The public PG Soft demo is available in several interface languages. This section refers to the English interface; the game is called “Cara Mahyong” in Indonesian. The game can run as HTML5, including in a browser or within a gaming platform. PG Soft does not list an official standalone Mahjong Ways APK. For details about using a browser-based demo, see the Mahjong Ways demo guide, and for device and APK questions, read the app and APK guide.

Mahjong Ways cascade: winning tiles removed and the win shown in the PG Soft demo

How a Mahjong Ways spin works

A spin is a sequence of possible winning rounds, not necessarily a single check of the first symbols to land. When a winning combination is recognised, its symbols are removed. New symbols then fall into the spaces, and the game checks the reels again. If another win forms, another cascade can follow within that same spin.

  1. Set the bet using the minus or plus control and review the bet amount shown in the interface.
  2. Tap SPIN to start the reels. Tap SPIN again or tap the game area to stop them.
  3. The game checks the landed symbols for a win. A winning group is removed from the grid.
  4. New symbols drop into the open positions. The game checks for another win and repeats the cascade process if one forms.
  5. If the spin has no further winning round, the sequence ends and the multiplier resets for the next spin.

The exact interface can vary with the platform hosting the game, but the official game controls list the same core functions for both titles. The spin sequence and the amount selected are separate things: the game’s rules explain how symbols and multipliers work, while the displayed bet controls the bet selection.

Gold-plated symbols and cascades

In either game, some non-Wild and non-Scatter symbols on reels 2, 3 and/or 4 can appear gold during a spin. If a gold symbol is involved in a win, it changes into a Wild in the next round after new symbols cascade down. A gold symbol that is not involved in a win does not become a Wild through this rule. This transformation gives the next symbol check a different reel layout, but does not guarantee another win.

Mahjong Ways 2 uses the same gold-plated rule in the main game. Its free-spins feature adds a more specific condition: all symbols other than Wild and Scatter on reel 3 appear gold during free spins. When one of those gold symbols is involved in a win, it turns into a Wild after the cascade. The extra reel-3 treatment applies to that feature, not to every spin in the base game.

The multiplier ladder, with an example

The multiplier is shown above the reels. At the beginning of a new spin it starts at x1. A win in the first round raises the multiplier for round two to x2. A win in round two raises it for round three to x3. A win in round three raises it for round four and any later rounds to x5. The ladder resets when a new spin begins.

For example, if a spin produces wins in its first, second and third rounds, and then has another cascade round, the round multipliers are x1, x2, x3 and x5. This example describes only the multiplier sequence; it does not predict a result or state a prize amount. The same x1, x2, x3 and x5 ladder applies in the main game of Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2.

For a fuller step-by-step explanation of the grid and controls, see how to play Mahjong Ways. The multiplier applies within the round sequence of a spin; it is not a feature that carries across separate spins.

Mahjong Ways free spins and Scatter rules

Three Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels trigger free spins in both games. Each additional Scatter adds two more free spins. The initial number differs between the titles, as do the ways the gold symbols behave during the feature. Free spins can be retriggered in both games, according to the game rules.

Free-spins rule Mahjong Ways Mahjong Ways 2
Trigger 3 Scatters anywhere 3 Scatters anywhere
Initial free spins 12 10
Each additional Scatter Adds 2 free spins Adds 2 free spins
Free-spins multiplier ladder x2, x4, x6, x10 x2, x4, x6, x10
Special gold-symbol rule Main gold-plated symbol rule applies All eligible symbols on reel 3 appear gold
Retriggering Possible Possible

The free-spins multiplier ladder is x2, x4, x6 and x10. These are the feature’s multiplier steps; they do not mean that a trigger automatically produces a win. As in the main game, wins and cascades determine how the round sequence proceeds. In Mahjong Ways 2, the reel-3 gold effect is limited to free spins and excludes Wild and Scatter symbols.

The Scatter’s appearance and trigger count can help distinguish the feature from unrelated claims, but the symbol is not a guarantee of a particular outcome. For more on the feature’s trigger and terminology, see the free spins and Scatter guide.

Gold symbols become Wild

Gold symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 that are part of a win turn into Wilds after new symbols drop.

Cascade multiplier

Every winning cascade raises the multiplier: x1, x2, x3, x5. In free spins: x2, x4, x6, x10.

Free spins from Scatter

3 Scatters give 12 free spins in Mahjong Ways and 10 in Mahjong Ways 2; each extra Scatter adds 2 more.

Mahjong Ways RTP, volatility and maximum win

RTP is a theoretical long-term return figure for a game version. It is not a forecast for an individual session and does not promise that a player will receive that percentage back over a short period. PG Soft lists RTP of 96.92% for Mahjong Ways and 96.95% for Mahjong Ways 2. Both games have medium session volatility.

Published performance detail Mahjong Ways Mahjong Ways 2
RTP 96.92% 96.95%
Main-game RTP component 68.89% 70.39%
Free-spins RTP component 28.03% 26.56%
Session volatility Medium Medium
Overall hit rate 28.54% 29.90%
Main-game hit rate 28.05% 29.44%
Free-spins hit rate 0.49% 0.46%
Big Win / Mega Win / Super Mega Win frequency 1/287, 1/970, 1/1,222 1/294, 1/1,201, 1/2,122

The hit-rate and frequency figures are game-level statistics. They do not tell a player when a feature will occur, and they are not a schedule for future results. The Big Win, Mega Win and Super Mega Win frequency labels are reported alongside the games’ stated categories; they should not be treated as a prediction for a particular player or session.

The advertised maximum win is 25,000x the bet for Mahjong Ways and 100,000x the bet for Mahjong Ways 2. These are advertised values, not typical outcomes or guarantees. In a simulation of 1 billion spins, the maximum exposure observed was 2,893x the bet for Mahjong Ways and 1,708x the bet for Mahjong Ways 2. The simulated maximum exposure is a separate simulation result; it does not replace or validate the advertised maximum. Further context is available in the RTP and maximum win guide.

RTP values that change by the hour on third-party pages are not official PG Soft values. The RTP is a fixed theoretical value for the game version, not a live reading that changes with recent results. The public demo can be useful for learning the interface and rules, but a demo session cannot establish what a later session will return.

Mahjong Ways vs Mahjong Ways 2: what changes?

Mahjong Ways 2 keeps the core mechanics of the first game while changing the reel shape, ways count and free-spins detail. Both titles use five reels, cascading wins, the gold-to-Wild transformation on the central reels, and the x1, x2, x3, x5 main-game multiplier ladder. Their published RTP figures are close, but the grid and feature details differ.

Comparison point Mahjong Ways Mahjong Ways 2
Announcement December 2019 April 2020
Grid 5 reels, 4 rows 5 reels, 4-5-5-5-4 rows

Free-spins gold feature Standard gold-plated rule Eligible symbols on reel 3 appear gold
RTP 96.92% 96.95%
Session volatility Medium Medium

The higher ways count in Mahjong Ways 2 comes from its extra positions on the middle reels. The difference in free-spin counts does not by itself show which game is preferable: each title has its own grid and feature rules, and neither number predicts the result of a session. Readers looking for a game-specific breakdown can use the Mahjong Ways 2 review.

Demo and real-money play: what differs?

A demo is intended to let a player view the game and its controls without making a real-money wager. Real-money play, where available, is provided through third-party gaming platforms rather than through a standalone account belonging to Mahjong Ways or PG Soft. Login and registration take place on the relevant platform, not inside the game itself. Availability of a game on a platform is not a statement that play is lawful in Bangladesh.

Point Public demo Real-money play through a third party
Purpose View the game interface and rules Play through a third-party gaming platform
Game access PG Soft public demo Access depends on the platform offering the game
Account The demo itself has no Mahjong Ways account Login and registration are handled by the platform
Result context Demo play does not establish future results Each spin remains an independent random outcome
Legal context Does not determine the legal status of other play Bangladesh law and the circumstances of use are relevant

The official PDFs do not describe a Feature Buy or bonus-buy option for either game. They also do not list a standalone PG Soft Mahjong Ways APK. The games are HTML5 and may run in a browser or inside a gaming platform, depending on access provided there. Do not assume that an app file or a download using the Mahjong Ways name is official. The login and registration guide covers the distinction between a game and a platform account.

Interface and controls

The control layout is broadly shared between Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2. In the public demo, the main action is SPIN, with bet controls and status information around the reel area. The menu includes the game’s explanatory material and history. On a PC, the Space key starts a spin; holding Space spins continuously. On a touch device, the game is operated through on-screen controls.

Control or display Function stated in the game information
SPIN Starts a spin; tap again or tap the game area to stop the reels
MINUS / PLUS Adjust the bet selection
WALLET BALANCE Displays the wallet balance provided by the playing environment
BET AMOUNT Shows bet size, bet level and Max Bet controls
WIN AMOUNT Opens game history
AUTO SPIN Runs automatic spins with listed stop conditions
TURBO SPIN Selects the turbo-spin mode
SOUND Controls game sound
PAYTABLE Opens symbol and payout information
RULES Opens game rules
HISTORY Opens the history view

Auto Spin has stop conditions for a balance decrease, a balance increase, or a single win exceeding a selected threshold. These are interface options, not a method of predicting or controlling the random outcome. The official control information states that total bet is calculated from bet size, bet level and base bet, with bet level ranging from 1 to 10. The controls do not alter the slot’s underlying rules.

The multiplier appears above the reels, and the game shows the number of ways there as well. The gaming environment hosting the game may provide or display the bet amount, wallet balance and win amount. The game history can help review previous rounds, but past results do not predict the next spin. For descriptions of the main screen, reel play and rules, use the how-to-play guide.

Mobile play and screen format

PG Soft lists iOS, Android, HTML5, MacOS and Windows as supported platforms for both games. The stated optimal display is 1080x2340 in portrait orientation with a 19.5:9 ratio. The game layout is therefore specified for a tall portrait screen as well as other listed platforms. Actual display and controls can depend on the browser or the platform hosting the game.

Because the games are HTML5, they can be accessed through a browser or within a gaming platform; PG Soft does not list an official standalone Mahjong Ways APK. A file hosted elsewhere should not be assumed to come from PG Soft simply because its name includes Mahjong Ways. The same caution applies to login screens: the games have no account of their own, and account registration is handled by a platform.

The public demo is a way to inspect the interface in a browser where it is available. Its language can vary, and this guide describes the English interface. A device’s ability to display the game does not establish whether real-money play is lawful or available to that user in Bangladesh.

Mahjong Ways 3, Super Scatter and spin-trick claims

Several search terms use the Mahjong Ways name for games or features that are not part of PG Soft’s two-game series. PG Soft’s official catalogue lists Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2, but not Mahjong Ways 3. Games labelled Mahjong Ways 3 on platforms come from other studios, so their features should not be attributed to PG Soft’s games.

“Mahjong Ways Super Scatter” is also a misleading series association. Mahjong Wins Super Scatter is a separate mahjong-themed slot by Pragmatic Play, not a PG Soft Mahjong Ways title. The term “scatter hitam” or “black scatter” is not part of either game according to their official PDFs. Claims about a black Scatter therefore do not describe the official Mahjong Ways or Mahjong Ways 2 rules.

Claims about Mahjong Ways 2 tricks, predictors, patterns or hacks are not supported by the game mechanics. Results are determined by a random number generator, and every spin is independent. A previous sequence, a time of day, or a particular button routine cannot make a future result due or ensure a feature. Hourly “RTP live” figures on third-party sites are not the fixed official RTP values listed for these game versions. For a focused explanation of these naming claims, see Mahjong Ways 3, Super Scatter and myths.
