How to play Mahjong Ways and Mahjong Ways 2

Both games use mahjong tiles on five reels. Mahjong Ways has four rows and 1,024 ways; Mahjong Ways 2 has an extra row on reels 2, 3 and 4, giving it a 4-5-5-5-4 layout and 2,000 ways. In the public demo, the ways count appears above the reels. The English interface is used in this guide.

You can open the games in the public demo guide. The controls below apply to both titles, while the reel layouts and free-spin details differ. These are HTML5 games that can run in a browser or within a gaming platform; the games do not have their own account or login system.

Starting a spin, step by step

1. Open Mahjong Ways or Mahjong Ways 2 in the game interface. Check the title and the ways count above the reels.
2. Review the BET AMOUNT control. Adjust bet size and bet level using MINUS or PLUS, or open BET AMOUNT to see the available settings.
3. Set the bet level from 1 to 10. The total bet is calculated as: bet size × bet level × base bet 20. The base bet 20 is part of the game’s calculation; this guide does not specify a currency amount.
4. Choose Max Bet only if you intend to select the maximum bet setting shown by the game. Check the displayed total before continuing.
5. Press SPIN to start. Tap SPIN again or tap the game area to stop the reels. On a PC, press Space to spin; holding Space starts continuous spins.
6. If symbols form a win, the game removes the winning symbols and drops new ones into the gaps. Follow the multiplier above the reels as each new cascade round is evaluated.

Mahjong Ways gameplay: how ways wins pay

A ways win starts with matching symbols on the leftmost reel and continues across adjacent reels from left to right. Matching symbols do not need to land on a fixed payline. A gap in the sequence ends that combination: symbols on a later reel do not create a ways win if the match has failed on an intervening reel.

The exact payout depends on the symbol and the bet setting. The paytable shows the game’s symbol values, so consult it in the selected title rather than assuming that every matching group pays the same. In Mahjong Ways, the board has 1,024 possible ways; Mahjong Ways 2 has 2,000. The additional positions in the middle reels account for its different layout.

Cascades, gold tiles and Wilds

A spin can contain more than one win round. After a winning combination is paid, its symbols disappear and replacement symbols fall into place. The game checks the new arrangement for another win. This sequence is called a cascade; it continues while new winning combinations form, then the spin ends.

The Wild is shown as a gold ingot marked WILD. It substitutes for other symbols but not for Scatter. Gold Plated symbols are different from the Wild at first: in the base game, eligible symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 may appear gold. When a gold symbol was involved in a win, it becomes a Wild after the next symbols cascade down. The change can help form a later combination, but it does not guarantee one.

Mahjong Ways 2 uses the same gold-symbol rule in its base game. Its free-spin feature adds a distinct rule: all eligible symbols on reel 3 appear gold during free spins. After a win and cascade, those gold symbols turn into Wilds. Scatter and Wild are excluded from this gold conversion.

Mahjong Ways rules: multipliers and worked examples

The base-game multiplier starts at x1 in the first round. A win in one round raises the multiplier for the next round: x2 for round two, x3 for round three, then x5 for round four and later rounds in that spin. The ladder resets when a new spin starts. The multiplier is displayed above the reels; use the in-game rules and paytable to check how it applies to wins.

Worked example, base game: a win in round one is shown at x1. If the cascade produces another win, round two is at x2; a further win is at x3 in round three. If another winning round follows, it is at x5, and later winning cascade rounds remain at x5. This example describes multipliers only, not a payout.

Worked example, free spins: the free-spin ladder is x2, x4, x6 and then x10. If wins continue through successive cascade rounds, the displayed multiplier advances through that sequence. The ladder is the same in both games, although the free-spin trigger and Mahjong Ways 2’s gold reel rule differ.

Scatter and free spins

The Scatter is identified by the red character 胡 (hu). In Mahjong Ways, three Scatters anywhere trigger 12 free spins, and each additional Scatter adds two. In Mahjong Ways 2, three Scatters trigger 10 free spins, with two more for each additional Scatter. The feature can be retriggered in both games. Auto Spin, Turbo Spin and menus

Auto Spin starts consecutive spins and includes stop conditions. Before starting, review the available conditions: balance decreases by, balance increases by, or a single win exceeds. The game stops when a selected condition is reached. Auto Spin does not change the game’s random outcomes or guarantee a particular result.

Turbo Spin speeds up the spin presentation. It does not change the rules, ways count or multiplier ladder. On desktop, Space starts a spin and holding it runs continuous spins. Use the on-screen controls if your device or browser does not respond to the keyboard shortcut.
